What's Coffee Got to do with TCM? Coffee is bitter and astringent in nature, it is considered a neutral herb in TCM. It can provide energy, promote digestion, urination and moves the blood. In western medicine, coffee contains caffeine, manganese, potassium, which can influence our body and the nervous system. When one presents Spleen Qi deficiency and dampness, coffee may be beneficial. To prevent over-consumption that would result in anxiety and depression, drink no more than 6-18 grams per day, that's about 1-3 cups of coffee for therapeutic benefits.
